Essay on Terrorism Excerpt

Terrorism, an age old phenomenon, has been common throughout history; in multiple cases, terrorism has even been successful in bringing about political change. At present, there is no internationally agreed upon definition of terrorism, however a frequently used definition of terrorism comes from the United Nations Security Council who refer to terrorism as, any act "intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non-combatants with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act." An objective definition of terrorism that would be accepted without opposition from one quarter or another is ultimately an impossibility, mainly because terrorism is both based on perception and perspective, embodied by the age old adage, “one man's terrorist, another man's freedom fighter.” The concept of terrorism is also often disingenuously and hypocritically used by states to delegitimize political opponents and to potentially legitimize the state's own use of fear and terror. Presently, the most popular image of terrorism is that of September11, 2001, often referred to as 9/11 when the terrorist organization, Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 commercial airplanes and deliberately crashed them into specific targets, including the World Trade Centres in New York City. Nearly a month after the death of nearly 3000 innocent civilians, with the purpose of protecting the American nation from such future attacks, the United States of America and the Bush Administration agreed to begin the `War on Terror'; a militaristic and ideological war against international terrorist networks, terrorist supporting states and Islamic militants in Afghanistan and later Iraq. The most effective method in combating terrorism is a sensible militaristic response; without irrationally reacting, using undiplomatic measures, vilifying a targeted community and having ulterior motives, all which are characteristics of the unsuccessful and ineffective United States led War on Terror.
