Second, it is surprising how little feminism explains women's participation. Given other literature, however, we cannot completely reject adherence to feminism--or support for feminist issues--as a source of women's participation. Andersen, for example, finds that feminism has increased the amount of participation among women (rather than increasing the numbers of women who participate). Claire Fulenwider, using a different means of evaluating adherence to feminism, finds a positive relationship between feminism and participation in 1972 and 1976, regardless of gender. Fulenwider's research, however, also supports a conclusion that feminism has a similar impact upon men's participation--which raises serious questions about the way support for feminism affects participation.

A detailed account of the carnival is not necessary here. It is enough to note that, despite false starts and minor catastrophes, the carnival was held and enjoyed. Profits from raffles and competitions and the original football dance, together with the profits of the carnival and the carnival dance, came to nearly £60. The gross receipts were over £80. The unexpected size of the profits intensified the rivalry of the claimants, but things remained formally quiet until ten days later, when the winding-up meeting of the carnival committee was held. Only fourteen of the original members attended this.

Al-Bayan aims at projecting a moderate line on Arab and world affairs and stresses economic news and issues at the local, Arab, and international levels. Through an agreement with the Financial Times of London it has access to the reporting of a wide network of correspondents. Some copies of the paper are sold in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan. Al-Bayan's Middle East Research Center provides research for special supplements on major economic and business issues as well as for the daily issues. In addition to discussing standard issues such as oil and foreign trade, Al-Bayan has done in-depth investigative analysis of subjects like abuses in the insurance business and poor management of vocational schools.

But the logic of the stock market as a business barometer is clear enough. The prices of stocks depend primarily upon dividends and upon dividend prospects, which in turn are based on earnings. The traders and investors are seeking to anticipate stock values, and in so doing to anticipate earnings. They are constantly appraising all the factors that affect earnings, which, of course, include the volume of business and commodity prices. Moreover, the so-called insiders have early information concerning the condition of their companies and may act accordingly, though all too frequently they are found to be poor judges of the speculative situation.

The money-rate factor in reality tends to heighten the barometric value of the stock market; for when business expands, commercial requirements tend to take funds away from speculation and to boost money rates until finally a point is reached at which they exceed the yields of stocks to such an extent that even speculative buying becomes limited. Thus the money market and the stock market are inseparably connected with business conditions. In this same connection we note that a stock-market break hurts business both directly and indirectly, while under normal conditions a rising stock market tends to benefit business.
free coach health research paper writing
It is understandable why the athlete would want to win the game for conscious reasons. Why the competition should cause him such violent physical reaction is a more complex problem. He himself does not know why his whole physiological and psychological organism gets itself so geared up that he cannot tolerate food. He is unaware that he is selectively mobilizing his forces to deal with the emergency. Determined to win the game, trying to live up to the standards of his superego, and seeking to earn the accolades of his coach and fans, the athlete mobilizes all his energies for the competition.

These proposals bring us to a major dilemma, perhaps the major dilemma of guaranteeing equal justice to the poor. The political prospects are dim for a national policy aimed at organizing the poor or promoting aggressive, reform-oriented legal services programs. The Reagan administration has consistently opposed a national legal services program that encourages local programs to file policy suits against powerful interests and allocating federal funds to programs with the potential to increase the political power of the poor. Given the unequal distribution of power in the United States, one may wonder if any national administration would propose and seek to pass legislation that might serve to alter prevailing power relationships.

The conflict between the theological elements of Christianity and science reached a climax in the Victorian era, to which our third retrospect is directed, because science had by that time gained immensely in strength and independence. Not long before that era opened, the past history and the future continuity of the earth had been shown to be vastly longer than the Bible taught. As the Scotch geologist, Hutton, put it: 'In the history of the earth there is no trace of a beginning and no prospect of an end.' Then, shortly after the era opened, the antiquity of man was shown to be much greater than the few thousand years which the Biblical chronology allowed it.
free maria montessori papers research
To that wonderful woman, Dr. Maria Montessori, belongs the honor and the everlasting gratitude of mankind for having systematized these ideals of education and recorded them in her book, a book that is at once a thrilling human document, a scientific textbook, a prophecy and a torch to all those whose work it is to teach little children. Dr. Montessori learned, as I learned, and as every teacher must learn, that only through freedom can individuals develop self-control, selfdependence, will power and initiative. There is no education except through self-education. There is no effective discipline except selfdiscipline.

The problem, both practical and moral, facing the medical profession in this situation is that of how to make the transition from a sanctity of life to a quality of life ethos while, at the same time, ensuring that the pendulum does not swing too far. There can be no doubt that it is now possible to extend the process of terminal illness far beyond natural boundaries; a halt must be called at some point. But the ethical problem lies in how that halt is called. It is perfectly legitimate for the doctor to ask himself: why should I stop this patient dying in peace?
