Recently a scientist in Japan demonstrated his "earth-water collector." This was simply a boxlike structure with no bottom and a sloping glass cover. Placed on the ground, it resembled a miniature hothouse. Within half an hour, the earth-water collector was filmed over on the underside of the glass, and soon water drops were forming and running down to be collected in a container. Amazingly, the collector produced about a quart of water a day for an area of about a square yard.

The Japanese tested the earth-water collector on volcanic islands in the Pacific, on Mount Fujiyama, and even in the deserts of Pakistan. Everywhere it was tested, it produced water. Soon portable plastic collectors were introduced. The simplest of all is the "survival kit" developed independently by Dr. Ray Jackson and Dr. Cornelius van Bavel of the United States Department of Agriculture Water Conservation Laboratory at Tempe, Arizona. This solar still -- for that is what it is, of course -- consists only of a six-foot square of plastic. To get water, all one has to do is dig a hole about 40 inches in diameter, and about half that depth, sloping in at the bottom. A bucket, or even a makeshift container, is placed in the bottom of the hole. The plastic sheet is placed over it, and the edges covered with dirt from the hole. Then the center of the plastic is pushed down, and weighted with a rock or dirt to form a cone that does not quite touch the bucket underneath.

Heat from the sun penetrates the plastic and cannot get out. As a result, the soil inside gets hot and hastens the evaporation of its moisture. More moisture is then drawn upward by capillary action. Jackson and van Bavel have produced up to two quarts a day with a single still as described here. If cactus is chopped into pieces and added inside the hole, even more water results. The water is safe to drink, being distilled. Another possible way of using solar energy is to exploit the photochemical or photoelectric effect rather than simply the heat content of sunshine. Just as solar batteries make use of the bundles of energy in light, suitable surfaces or membranes might be made to convert the light energy into ion movement, and at efficiencies many hundreds of times as efficient as the 0.1 percent of the simple solar still.
